NFL looks better in steroid issue - unless you look too closely

By PHIL SHERIDAN

Philadelphia Inquirer

PHILADELPHIA - The pat on the head came from Christopher Shays, a Republican congressman from Connecticut.

"This has been light years different from Major League Baseball," Shays told NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue. "I want to thank you for knowing what the hell is going on."

[Excerpt]

There may be no praise fainter than being called smarter than Bud Selig, but there you go. Tagliabue and the NFL have been much more aggressive about steroids for much longer than Selig and MLB, and yet there are still very real questions about the integrity of the NFL's program.

To use a potentially annoying sports metaphor, those who cheat to win are like kick returners sprinting down the sideline on the way to the end zone. Baseball is the defender who gives up the chase as soon as the runner gets by him. The NFL is the guy who runs the length of the field, showing good hustle but still not having any chance to prevent the touchdown.

Football had its day on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, and there's no doubt Tagliabue and the others called by the House Government Reform Committee acquitted themselves better than their baseball counterparts did last month.

170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
