Direct Relief International 2005 Shareholders' Meeting

California’s largest international nonprofit organization to announce 2004 results; With health leaders from Sri Lanka and Cameroon and Corporate Philanthropic Directors from FedEx and Merck

Keynote by “Charity Navigator” Founder Trent Stamp

Santa Barbara, CA. May 20, 2005 – On Friday, May 20, 2005, Direct Relief International will hold its third annual Shareholders’ Meeting to report the results of the fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2005.

The meeting occurs against the backdrop of unprecedented private and corporate giving for tsunami relief, chronic health challenges in developing countries in Africa, and evolving nonprofit standards of governance and accountability. Direct Relief’s report to its investors will include briefings from leaders in each of these fields.

Direct Relief International, ranked for several years as the largest international nonprofit organization in California and among the largest in the United States based on private support, received over $200 million in contributions of cash and medical material resources in fiscal year 2004-2005 – more than doubling the previous year’s results.

The organization will announce its specific results and brief investors on finances, humanitarian health programs, and the extensive tsunami relief efforts, which spurred a significant increase in cash and medical material donations.

The meeting is free and open to the public and will take place at Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Resort in Santa Barbara, California on May 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Keynote speaker Trent Stamp, Executive Director of Charity Navigator, ‘America’s premier independent charity evaluator”, will speak about “The Future of Philanthropy in the U.S.”.

Other speakers will include international health leaders whose work in their home countries is supported by Direct Relief

• Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne, Executive Director of Sarvodaya, the largest nongovernmental organization in Sri Lanka, will talk about the tsunami and the challenges of the recovery.

• Dr. Judith Shang, Executive Director of the Younde, Cameroon-based Shemka Foundation, will speak about the role of private health services and other development efforts in Cameroon.

Directors of corporate philanthropic efforts from leading U.S. companies FedEx and Merck, which provide extensive support to Direct Relief’s humanitarian efforts also will provide insights into their companies’ leading corporate efforts.

Direct Relief’s annual shareholders’ meeting is unique in the nonprofit sector. The organization was one of the first U.S. organizations to respond to the tsunami disaster and to disclose a strict, detailed policy regarding the use for donations designated for tsunami relief.

“This year’s meeting is particularly important given the extraordinary generosity that occurred after the tsunami,” said Direct Relief President and CEO Thomas Tighe. “People and businesses who entrust us with their money and products deserve to know what we do with it, and why.”

Tighe will report on the increase in private charitable contributions that resulted in $20 million in cash donations and nearly $200 million wholesale worth of medical product donations from the U.S. pharmaceutical and medical-manufacturing sector.

In the nineteen weeks following the tsunami, Direct Relief has provided $25,584,138 in critically needed medical aid, in the form of material donations and cash grants to medical partners in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Somalia. Direct Relief has sent 29 emergency shipments containing 186,734 pounds of specifically requested pharmaceuticals, nutritional products, medical supplies, and medical equipment, to partners in tsunami-affected countries of South and Southeast Asia. These shipments will provide approximately 2,842,247 full courses of treatment to individuals affected by the tsunami. $3,759,787, in the form of cash grants, is supporting the work of 12 resident in-country and international nongovernmental organizations.

“The perspectives of local health leaders in the tsunami area and in Africa are rarely heard directly and unfiltered,” said Tighe. “We are honored to provide them with this opportunity to share the realities of their work, which we support as extensively as we can.”

Direct Relief also expanded its domestic assistance efforts and will report on a program launched 16 months ago that has furnished nearly $9 million in wholesale medicines and supplies to nonprofit community clinics in California, where more than 6 million residents lack health insurance.

Speakers include:

Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne, Exec. Director, Sarvodaya, Sri Lanka Dr. Judith Shang, Exec. Director, Quality Healthcare Unit, Cameroon Ms. Brenda Colatrella, Sr. Director, Office of Contributions, Merck Ms. Lisa Daniel, Sr. Communications Specialist, FedEx Keynote speaker Trent Stamp, Executive Director of Charity Navigator, will speak about “The Future of Philanthropy in the U.S.”

170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
