Christina Machion entered the Rutgers M.P.A. / I.D.A. program in the Fall of 1995 after completing her undergraduate degree in Spanish at Catholic University. She currently is serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in the township of Tatar Schmidt in Chile. In her work as an International Municipal Management volunteer in Chile, Ms. Machion is helping to improve the internal organization of local municipal government, collaborating with social and economic planning of the township, and assisting with the planning of electrical projects in rural areas. She also is organizing women's groups and teaching English to local residents.
"The Peace Corps experience itself, living, working and adapting to life in another country is quite a challenging experience, socially, personally and professionally," Ms. Machion said. "But these challenges are exactly what makes one see why he or she has dedicated himself or herself to providing service."
"What attracted me to the Rutgers-Peace Corps program was its practical approach in constructing a thesis topic and paper," she said. "It has been interesting as well as challenging to see how the skills taught in the program can be applied in practice. (A)t times, such skills are difficult, if not impossible, to implement for reasons such as custom and culture."
