Thousands of miles from home, two Henderson residents are working as Peace Corps volunteers to promote literacy and HIV awareness, just a few of the causes the government-run organization, which is celebrating its 44th anniversary this month, champions across the globe.
The Henderson volunteers, 23-year-old Sarah Gluck of Southfork and 27-year-old Jill Rhodes of Green Valley Ranch, are two of 36 Nevadans serving remote corners of the world.

Gluck, who also graduated from the Las Vegas Academy and then studied communications at the University of Southern California, works on an island in Ecuador with a local non-profit group, the National Institute for Children and their Families.
The institute gives scholarships to poor children's families so the children can stay in school rather than work.
In addition to her work with the non-profit group, Gluck teaches English to children, runs a youth group, leads classes on HIV and AIDS and organizes an after-school tutoring program on the island of 5,000.
Both Rhodes and Gluck said they have been inspired by their work in Africa and South America and said they hoped to have careers in international relations. Both plan to return to graduate school to get their master's degrees after they have finished their two-year commitment to the program, they said.
"It's all been a really great experience," Gluck said in a phone interview.
Nearly 8,000 Americans work as Peace Corps volunteers. In the last few years, that number has grown significantly as President Bush and Congress have increased the program's funding, Peace Corps spokeswoman Barbara Daly said.
