(RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, USA) The city of Richmond may block part of Riverside Drive on South Side tonight so that creatures called spotted salamanders can crawl to a pond along the road and mate.
An isolated population of the cigar-size amphibians exists between the Pony Pasture and Huguenot Woods sections of James River Park. For years, many of the migrating salamanders were killed by cars.
Ralph White, manager of the James River Park system, began blocking Riverside Drive last year. He may block it tonight if conditions are right. The animals like rainy nights in the 40s, although the 50s are better.
White encouraged people to watch, but a visit will be a gamble. "People may see the animals, or they may not."
White asked that people call him if they find dead salamanders in the road.
White plans to block off about a half-mile of Riverside Drive, from the exit at the Pony Pasture parking lot to Rockfalls Drive.
INFO
CALL James River Park Manager Ralph White at 646-8911 or 363-9214.
