LaBelle residents were saddened once again to learn of the untimely death of one of their own. Details are sketchy about the death of David Seth Howard, 36, which is being investigated by the Asheville, NC, Police Department.
Mr. Howard was on vacation, headed to family property in North Carolina to do some camping and fishing when he apparently decided to spend some time in Asheville. On the evening of Wednesday, June 29, he took a cab for an evening out and found himself in a bad area of town where he was attacked by three or four individuals and robbed some time between 11-11:30 p.m.
According a family spokesman, cause of death was a brain hemorrhage caused by an aneurysm.
Mr. Howard graduated from LaBelle High School and from the University of Central Florida, where he majored in business. He had taught in Hendry County Schools and in Lee County, and had spent one-and-a-half years in Micronesia as a Peace Corps volunteer.
Mr. Howard's death comes closely on the heels of two other untimely deaths of local people. Bernard Culliver was murdered in his apartment in Riviera Beach. Investigators in Palm Beach County are searching for the killer or killers of the former LaBelle man, who was found dead in his Riviera Beach apartment in the early morning hours of Friday, June 17. He had been stabbed and his apartment set afire.
A local woman, Lola Treadwell, died from injuries she sustained in a vehicle rollover during the early morning hours of Sunday, June 26. She was a LaBelle Middle School math teacher.
Mrs. Treadwell and Mr. Howard were both members of the LHS graduating class of 1987; Mr. Culliver graduated from LHS in 1986.

American Taboo: A Peace Corps Tragedy Returned Volunteers met with author Philip Weiss in Baltimore on June 18 to discuss the murder of Peace Corps Volunteer Deborah Gardner. Weiss was a member of a panel that included three psychiatrists and a criminal attorney. Meanwhile, the Seattle U.S. Attorney's office announced that Dennis Priven cannot be retried for the murder. "We do not believe this case can be prosecuted by anyone, not only us, but in any other jurisdiction in the United States." Read background on the case here.
June 14: Peace Corps suspends Haiti program After Uzbekistan, the Peace Corps has announced the suspension of a second program this month - this time in Haiti. Background: The suspension comes after a US Embassy warning, a request from Tom Lantos' office, and the program suspension last year. For the record: PCOL supports Peace Corps' decision to suspend the two programs and commends the agency for the efficient way PCVs were evacuated safely. Our only concern now is with the placement of evacuated PCVs and the support they receive after interrupted service.
Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
