Great Expectations of Difficulty
'Is it as you expected?' friends from home have asked. Of course, in some ways being a Peace Corps Volunteer and being in Lesotho is as I had expected, yet in other ways it's better or worse.
But there's really only one expectation that I often recall, and then lament about: It's not as gnarly living here as I had hoped. Gnarly meaning rugged, desperate, spartan, primitive.
True, I have no running water, no toilet in my house and no electricity, which means life without lights, a refridgerator, etc. So I pump my water into buckets and carry them home. So I have to be more prudent about food storage and I must read by candle or kerosene lamp light in the evenings. I bathe by pouring water over my head and I do my business in a pit latrine down by the circle of ashes where I burn my trash. But these are all things that I truthfully don't even think about anymore as part of roughing it. It has been so easy to adapt to these new ways of doing things that I no longer think about them at all. They're just part of the daily routine.
Moreover, an hour's taxi ride away is the capital of the country where I can eat at KFC, buy a variety of groceries and use the Internet for free.
So, I'm sorry to disappoint myself (and maybe you too?), but life here is not as problematic as I had hoped. But that's just for me.

 | Military Option sparks concerns The U.S. military, struggling to fill its voluntary ranks, is allowing recruits to meet part of their military obligations by serving in the Peace Corps. Read why there is rising opposition to the program among RPCVs. Director Vasquez says the agency has a long history of accepting qualified applicants who are in inactive military status. John Coyne says "Not only no, but hell no!" Latest: RPCV Chris Matthews to discuss the issue on Hardball tonight. |
 | Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
