Uganda RPCV Rosalind (Prophet) Brannigan dies in Michigan
East Lansing native was an advocate for health

• Memorial services for Rosalind (Prophet) Brannigan will be held Sept. 8 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
Even after learning she had inoperable lung cancer, Rosalind (Prophet) Brannigan continued to work as a public health advocate.
The East Lansing native died Aug. 19 at her home in Arlington, Va. She was 63.
Brannigan was diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2003 - 38 years after she quit smoking.
But for a year, the vice president of Drug Strategies, a nonprofit that promotes ways to combat substance abuse, kept working nine to five.
She also swam nearly every day to keep up her physical conditioning during chemotherapy treatments.
In December 2004, Brannigan began focusing solely on increasing awareness of lung cancer, a disease that kills more people than almost every other cancer combined.
In an op-ed article picked up by several newspapers this year, she wrote:
"Smokers, former smokers, and others at risk of lung cancer should ask their physicians about screening options, so that they can be diagnosed earlier than Peter Jennings - and I."
Brannigan, who grew up on Beech Street in East Lansing, graduated from Michigan State University in 1965 and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Uganda for about two years.
In 1989, she joined the National Leadership Coalition on AIDS at a time when people were being fired for just having the disease.
She developed workplace programs for the FBI, the National Funeral Directors Association, the South African mining industry and others.
She was proud to be involved with the AIDS epidemic when it was new and full of controversy, said her husband, Bill Brannigan, a former ABC News correspondent.
"She felt she was on the cutting edge of a cutting edge public health issue," he said.

| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
