QUANTICO -- Daniele Durieux Sorhagen and Phillip G. LeBel were married on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at the Green Hill Yacht and Country Club on the Wicomico River in Quantico.

Justice Dara Rip of Woodside, Calif., presided over the civil ceremony.

The bride's son, James, of Whippany, N.J., and daughter, Juliette Fershtman, of Berkeley, Calif., served as escorts in the procession. Daughters Natasha LeBel Mentzer of Manhattan and Melissa LeBel of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., accompanied the bridegroom. Shlomo Bachrach of Washington, D.C., served as witness. Guests included friends from the Salisbury area, New Jersey, New York, California, Washington, D.C., France, Ethiopia, India, China, Korea, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal.

The bride, 62, retired in December as a language arts teacher from Memorial Junior High School in Whippany, where she was employed for the past 26 years. A native of Paris, France, she taught school in eastern France for two years in the early 1960s and was a junior officer in the French military reserves prior to coming to the United States in 1966. She completed a bachelor's degree at Kean University and a master's degree in education at Montclair State University, in Upper Montclair, N.J. She holds certifications in reading and special education, and is a learning disabilities teacher consultant. She is the daughter of Marcel and the late Yvonne Durieux. Her father is a retired engineer living in southern France who served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

The groom, 63, is professor of economics in the school of business at Montclair State University and served previously as dean of the school, as well as chair of the department of economics and finance for several years. A native of Salisbury and a 1960 graduate of Wicomico High School, he is the son of Ellen G. Bloodsworth, a retired counselor of the Maryland Department of Employment Security of Salisbury, and the late Louis E. LeBel of Montreal, Canada and Tampa, Fla., who was an executive with the Firestone Tire Co. The groom's stepfather, Charles Bloodsworth, is a retired regional sales manager of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. in Salisbury.

The groom received his bachelor's degree in economics at Washington College in Chestertown, and his master's and doctoral degrees at Boston University. He was a former Peace Corps volunteer teacher in Ethiopia during the mid-1960s, a Fulbright senior lecturer at the University of Dakar in the early 1980s and founder of the Center for Economic Research on Africa at Montclair State University in the late 1980s. In addition to consulting for various international agencies over the years, he has traveled and worked in some 30 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, Europe and Latin America, and has written extensively in the fields of energy and natural resources, and on risk management policies.

The couple met through a matching service more than 10 years ago. When not sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, they plan to spend time between their home on Leonard Mill pond in Delmar, visiting with friends and relatives in France, and their residence in Montclair. The bride's previous marriage ended in divorce, as did the groom's.

Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong Date: April 2 2005 No: 543 Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong
170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
