AUSTIN — The men and women running for governor cast themselves as a middle-class bunch in tune with the average Texan.
Their 2004 federal tax returns show that to be true in many ways. Like lots of Texans, they pay mortgage interest and property taxes and donate to charities. Several earned set salaries.
But their incomes tend to be higher than the state median. Some of their tax documents tell of family trusts or royalties or, in the case of independent candidate Kinky Friedman, thousands of dollars in gambling winnings and losses.
"I think everybody knows that Kinky likes to go to Vegas. That's no secret," said Dean Barkley, Friedman's campaign director.
Friedman, a musician and author who is seeking an extension to file his complete return in October, had $241,710 in gross business income, according to the 2004 return provided by his campaign.
After expenses for costs such as travel, meals, advertising and management fees, Friedman is reporting a net profit of $32,685. His other income including interest and dividends adds up to an adjusted gross income of $36,519.
"I don't think that Kinky is a rich man, but he does OK," Barkley said.
His $56,494 in itemized deductions includes $35,000 in gambling losses last year. Another part of his return outlines miscellaneous income including $35,000 in gambling winnings.
Friedman already has publicly discussed his penchant for the casinos. He told of his luck in early August when he won $45,612 playing a slot machine at Harrah's in New Orleans.
"It's a legal activity, and he likes doing it," Barkley said. "Too bad some of that money doesn't come into Texas and he has to go to Vegas or New Orleans to do it."
Friedman reports owing taxes of $4,618 and an estimated tax penalty of $132.
