PRINCETON TOWNSHIP - Antoinette Allen's resume is full with credentials that make her more than qualified to be the Hun School's head field hockey coach.

She has coached at the collegiate level at Columbia University as well as a pair of private schools in New York State. She even served with the Peace Corps in Paraguay.

"The big thing I learned in the Peace Corps was patience," the first-year head coach said. "It helps to be patient with the girls. It helps to let their true talent come out."

Allen was inheriting a Hun team, which had won just 15 games after repeating as NJISAA Tournament champions in 2001, so patience would have come in handy. However, the Raiders have surprisingly opened the season undefeated - until yesterday. Hun ran into a tough West Windsor-Plainsboro North team, which handed it a 2-0 loss.

"There are some minor details we need to work on," Allen said. "We need to finish plays. That was our weakness today. In the other games we played, we dominated the game. I didn't know too much about the competition, but when we stepped out onto the field, we clearly dominated the pace. Today, it was a 50-50 game."

The WW-P North defense has had shaky moments against solid competition. The Knights (5-2) gave up two goals - including a 60-yard dribble-and-shoot - against Hopewell Valley. The defense couldn't hold an one-goal lead against Allentown.

Yesterday, the defense held Hun (4-1-1) without a shot on goal in the first half. When the Raiders turned up the pressure in the second half, goalie Amy Farkas stepped up her play in making seven saves for her fourth shutout while allowing Meghan Hunter and Ann Dysart's goals stand.

"It's just taking us awhile to make the connections and get to know each other," senior defensive back/midfielder Kate Oser said. "I don't know what it is, but we are making those connections some much better. We are communicating and talking more. We are some much better (now) than we were at the beginning of the season."

It appears as if the cupboard isn't completely bare. Allen has some nice players in Tyler Willey, Katrina Murray, Lindsay Natale and Sarah Dileo.

"I didn't anticipate our record," Allen said. "The goal was just to make a cohesive unit and to play good hockey. From the first game, we have been doing that. They are working together, making good decisions and working as a unit."

Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong Date: April 2 2005 No: 543 Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong
170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
