Returned Peace Corps Volunteer shirlene allred can be contacted at shirlenedallredahilldafdmil

Country of Service: Swaziland

Training Group: education, science and math

Cities you served in: Lobamba abd Vuvulane

Arrival Year: 1977

Departure Year: 1980

Work Description: Form IV and V science and math teacher

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

Married and divorced within the first two years of return from Peace Corps,
returned to Swaziland at same school and position as teacher yrs 1985-86.
Returned to the U.S. to work for civil service, first with the Army in New
Jersey in'88 and transferred back to Utah. Currently working as a
statistician for the solid propellant lab work group at Hill AFB. No children or
spouse. Recently visited Swaziland (2000) besides Ethiopia and South
Africa.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

Wish I could have done more to integrate the lessons to teach the students
to think and study how they could use this knowledge to better their lifes
and be more independent. To be proud of who they are and that only they
can raise above their problems by their own efforts and stop depending on
others. Was surprised to learn how well some of my former students have
done for themselves (Parliment Speaker, fire cheif, Head of Genetics for
Ustutu Pulp, etc).

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

Former volunteers whom I trained with and grew fond of and could call as
Friends. This includes Chris Demo, Rick Enkoji, Mark Bishop and Kai
Rasmussen (Kai, I have some news about Richard Patrick). Where is Kim
Tillotsen, Charlie McBride and John Roscovenski(?), besides Mark Erbaugh
and Harry Rosso? Dennis Lawn, I have some good news for you, too.

Any message for returned volunteers?:

Who is going to the onvention this June in Washington D.C.?

Hi Shirlene! I am writing a biography about Donna Taylor, whom I believe you lived with in 77 in Vuvulane (she mentioned you in a letter as "a very lovely person"). I would love to get in touch to ask you some questions about your time with Donna. Please let me know how we could get in touch. Thanks so much! - Rose Jennings
