Casa Grande Elementary's Davidson is named state's top superintendent

Frank Davidson, superintendent of the Casa Grande Elementary School District, has been named Superintendent of the Year by the Arizona School Administrators Association.
He will represent Arizona at the American Association of School Administrators convention Feb. 25 in San Diego.
ASAA Executive Director Harold Porter said Davidson was chosen by a panel of former Arizona superintendents of the year who evaluated the applications.
The competition was open to all the superintendents in the state.
"It was a tough competition," Porter said. "There were several outstanding candidates, but Dr. Davidson emerged with the highest vote count."
Applications from the 50 state superintendents of the year will be screened by a national panel and the top four will be invited to Washington, D.C., (expenses paid) for interviews at the National Press Club.
The national winner will be announced at the February convention and given a $2,000 savings bond, a jacket, a gold medallion and $10,000 for a college scholarship to a high school student who attends the high school from which the national superintendent graduated.
The three finalists will receive silver medallions and $1,000 savings bonds.
Porter said Arizona has not had a National Superintendent of the Year since Carol Peck from Alhambra Elementary School District was selected in 1991.
Davidson, who completed his doctorate in May, has been superintendent of the CGESD since July 1997.
He did his student teaching in 1978 in Kansas, went into the Peace Corps in 1979 and worked in Paraguay, where he taught grades six to eight and became curriculum coordinator.
In 1982, he was hired as a second-grade teacher in Coolidge. He began teaching fourth grade in Marana in 1985 and four years later was hired as a principal in San Manuel.
Davidson began working for Casa Grande district as principal of Cholla Elementary School in July 1991. In March 1993, he was promoted to assistant superintendent.
CGESD Governing Board Chairman Garye Vasquez nominated Davidson for the award.
"Having worked with Frank going on nine years, I can't imagine working with another superintendent," Vasquez said.
"He brings a level of professionalism and dedication that is unsurpassed."
Davidson also will be recognized Dec. 15 at the Arizona School Boards Association/ASAA luncheon with three All Arizona Superintendents representing small, medium and large school districts.

Congratulations to the Peace Corps for the highest number of volunteers in 30 years with 7,810 volunteers serving in 71 posts across the globe. Of course, the President's proposal to double the Peace Corps to 15,000 volunteers made in his State of the Union Address in 2002 is now a long forgotten dream. With deficits in federal spending stretching far off into the future, any substantive increase in the number of volunteers will have to wait for new approaches to funding and for a new administration.  | PC apologizes for the "Kasama incident"
The District Commissioner for the Kasama District in Zambia issued a statement banning Peace Corps activities for ‘grave’ social misconduct and unruly behavior for an incident that occurred on September 24 involving 13 PCVs. Peace Corps said that some of the information put out about the incident was "inflammatory and false." On October 12, Country Director Davy Morris met with community leaders and apologized for the incident. All PCVs involved have been reprimanded, three are returning home, and a ban in the district has since been lifted. |
