Judge the qualifications

OK, I'm a big girl. I recognize that mudslinging is part of politics. I don't like it, but I recognize it. However, the TV ad I saw the other morning was over the top.

My choice for Democratic lieutenant governor is party faithful John Garamendi. I believe he has and will serve the people of California faithfully and honestly.

The ad I saw on TV highlighted a statement by Jackie Speier, who is running against him in the primary for the Democratic nomination. She is using the information that she was among the Americans who were ambushed by fanatics in 1978 in Johnstown, Guyana, to indicate that she is qualified to serve as the lieutenant governor of California. I'm sorry she was among those ambushed, and I'm glad she survived, unlike the other loyal Americans who also were attacked on the tarmac that day. However, this experience does not qualify her to serve in this or any other office. I don't believe she should be using this experience to romanticize her life.

Garamendi was in the Peace Corps, and I don't see him blowing that experience of his youth into a "cause" to vote for him.

I urge everyone to take a look at the people supporting Garamendi and his statement in the primary election pamphlet. Examine his opponents also, and then decide to vote intelligently Tuesday. I hope you will choose Garamendi for lieutenant governor of California.
