I served in Colombia initially in the Educational Television program (Colombia 13) in Bogotā, then taught ESL at the Universidad de Nariņo. Training began Sept 1963 in Albuquerque, and we returned to the US late August 1965.
I was married to Susan Griffin in 1966 -- 6 or 7 months after returning to the US -- finished a B.A. degree in Linguistics, divorced 4 years later; taught English as a Second Language to adults then Computer Programming, and ended my teaching career in the Berkeley Unified School District after 30+ years. I received a PhD in Romance Philology from UC Berkeley in 2000.
Since then, my partner Lale, a Turkish-American guide and translator -- and I have traveled back and forth from our home Berkeley to our second home in Istanbul, Turkey. From 2002 until the outbreak of the COVID pandemic, we also spent 3 months almost every year in Paris, where I worked at a variety of libraries (BnF, IRHT, Arsenal, studying Medieval French manuscripts.
I have two emails: johnflevy@berkeley.edu and johnflevy@yahoo.com
