Gerald Sodomka - are you the 'Gerry' that I vaguely remember from Sokoto 1966? ( I came across your name when googling around.)
My maiden name was Frances Filson and I was a VSO in Sokoto (at Federal Government College) in 1966. You will certainly remember Wenol Hughes, also a VSO then? She and I are till in regular touch; indeed Wenol and her husband last visited us in France, where we now live, earlier this year. The only other person from Sokoto I have seen since was Tom McGlew (some time in the 80s, by which time he was a successful corporate lawyer in Washington).
It was a fascinating though sad year wasn't it? I returned to Nigeria four years later with my huband, Chris Allen, who taught African history at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.
After that we spent 30 years in Edinburgh in Scotland. Now that we are retired, I have the travel bug again, and am off to India for a second solo trip this winter.
