Ruth Martin
Position at AISB: ESL(English as a second language) unit teacher and Grades 9-12 ESL
How long have you been at AISB? 3 months
Where are you originally from? Massachusetts
Educational Background: Clark University--BA in Government and Spanish.
Where else have you lived or worked before coming to Bucharest? I lived in Madrid, Spain for a semester during college. I was in the Peace Corps for 2 years (9 months in Albania and 15 months in Romania).
How and why did you get into teaching and, most specifically international teaching? Teaching English in Albania kept me on my toes. Everything was extremely vivid from beginning to end—the grand exit: civil war broke out in my town and I escaped over the border to Greece. The Peace Corps trained me to be a teacher and it seemed to be an excellent way to learn about different people and the world.
Why did you select Bucharest? After I completed the Peace Corps I decided to stay . I wasn't done with Romania, or perhaps Romania wasn't done with me.
What impressions do you have of AISB and the students at the school? I'm impressed by the sincerity, quality, and dedication of the AISB staff. The students enjoy being challenged and participating. The school has a nice, positive atmosphere.
What impressions do you have of Romania? It is fascinating, challenging, full of contradictions, and evokes strong emotions of all kinds. It seems inadequate to say, "I like it."
What do you miss most about home? My family, friends, Massachusetts weather (rainstorms in particular).
Marital Status: Single
What are your hobbies? Reading, being with friends, writing.
If you weren't a teacher, what do you think you would be? A writer—I enjoy trying to capture the essence of a moment of real life.

I used to be one of Ruth Martin's students during her stay in Albania from September 1996 to February 1997. Now I live in Boston, MA and if anyone knows about her whereabouts or e-mail address, I would appreciate it a lot. It would be really interesting to get in touch with her again. My e-mail address is gazionkotoni22@yahoo.com.
