Stephanie Lynn Malmgren, 23, the daughter of Scott and Irene Malmgren of Orange, has been accepted into the Peace Corps.

Malmgren departed for Niger on July 24 and is training to become a community health education Peace Corps volunteer.

Upon graduation in October, Malmgren will be working to monitor the health of her community and encourage positive and preventative health behaviors. Her main responsibilities will include conducting home visits to evaluate household health practices, demonstrating how to improve the production of foods rich in vitamin A, and educating people about better health practices, including the prevention of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

A graduate of El Modena High School, Malmgren graduated from UCLA in 2006 with a bachelor of arts in political science. She is member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and an active member in her church congregation, singing in choir, playing handbells and conducting the children's choir.

"What attracted me most to the Peace Corps was the opportunity to help people outside of my community and to learn about another culture," Malmgren said. "I have grown up volunteering for different organizations involving children and this was another opportunity to reach more people."

During the first three months of her service, Malmgren will live with a host family in Niger to become fully immersed in the country's language and culture. After acquiring the language and cultural skills necessary to assist her community, Malmgren will serve for two years in Niger, living in a manner similar to people in her host country.

The Peace Corps entered the central African country of Niger in 1962. More than 2,800 volunteers have since served. Since 80 percent of the Niger population lives in rural areas, volunteers work on agriculture, the environment, community development, youth, education and health projects to help Nigerian communities attain household food security and to promote sustainable development. Currently, 119 volunteers are serving in Niger, also working to promote HIV/AIDS prevention.

Ambassador revokes clearance for PC Director A post made on PCOL from volunteers in Tanzania alleges that Ambassador Retzer has acted improperly in revoking the country clearance of Country Director Christine Djondo. A statement from Peace Corps' Press Office says that the Peace Corps strongly disagrees with the ambassador’s decision. On June 8 the White House announced that Retzer is being replaced as Ambassador. Latest: Senator Dodd has placed a hold on Mark Green's nomination to be Ambassador to Tanzania.

Suspect confesses in murder of PCV Search parties in the Philippines discovered the body of Peace Corps Volunteer Julia Campbell near Barangay Batad, Banaue town on April 17. He served with honor One year ago, Staff Sgt. Robert J. Paul (RPCV Kenya) carried on an ongoing dialog on this website on the military and the peace corps and his role as a member of a Civil Affairs Team in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have just received a report that Sargeant Paul has been killed by a car bomb in Kabul. Words cannot express our feeling of loss for this tremendous injury to the entire RPCV community. Most of us didn't know him personally but we knew him from his words. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. He was one of ours and he served with honor.
