[Excerpt]
Ben Pomykala, 29, returned from the Peace Corps in 2006 after working with school-aged children in Lesotho for two years. Pomykala, a South Burlington High School alumnus whose family runs the Pomykala Farm on Grand Isle, said he was able to find cell phone and Internet service in certain areas of the African nation and was able to stay in touch with friends and family in the States.
"They never got land lines and now they have cell phone coverage," Pomykala said. "People want cell phones in Africa even if they didn't have access to a network."
Pomykala posted video footage on YouTube of the gardens and greenhouses he built with four primary schools in Lesotho. From 2004 through 2006, Pomykala worked in the rural southern mountains of Lesotho in schools and the local health clinic. He said his knowledge of agriculture and nutrition was fostered by growing up on his family's farm.
Pomykala moved to Arlington, Va., recently and started a business maintaining personal vegetable gardens for homeowners, an idea he said started in Lesotho. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho, Pomykala said he had an incredible experience and gained a world perspective that he will carry always.
"There is nothing like getting out of your comfort zone and getting to a point where the idea of home genuinely becomes a tiny mud and stone hut in an African village," Pomykala said.

| Dodd vows to filibuster Surveillance Act Senator Chris Dodd vowed to filibuster the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that helped this administration violate the civil liberties of Americans. "It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them." |
| What is the greatest threat facing us now? "People will say it's terrorism. But are there any terrorists in the world who can change the American way of life or our political system? No. Can they knock down a building? Yes. Can they kill somebody? Yes. But can they change us? No. Only we can change ourselves. So what is the great threat we are facing? I would approach this differently, in almost Marshall-like terms. What are the great opportunities out there - ones that we can take advantage of?" Read more. |
