worked overseas on Thai/Burma border in 1996 for a year.
Since that time, I have focused on tuberculosis as a nurse consultant, at
the Francis J. Curry National TB Center in San Francisco, and for the past six
months ( since November 2001) for the state of Oregon, now living in
Portland.
Married, no children, and still focused on our "small" world.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
It was the best of times, the worst of times, and gave me perspective that
can not easily abide the self-preoccupation that seems to come easily to so
many of my colleagues. Peace Corps made us citizens of the world for life.
Thank God!

Came home and had two beautiful daughters, got involved with the
League of Women Voters, worked for a regional planning agency doing
community and economic development, worked as marketing, public
relations and sales director for architectural/engineering firm, worked for
the City of Fort Wayne directing their business development efforts in the
Department of Economic Development. Got remarried to a wonderful guy,
George, and had another beautiful daughter, Katy. Currently volunteering
at school and tutoring Afghan refugees in English and cross-cultural
activities. I continue to remain active in international activities.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
I'm still bothered daily by what was told to me: that Afgans associating
with Americans, especially Peace Corps Volunteers, were summarily
executed when the Russians invaded in '79. Other messages that I left
with: 1) You can be anything you want to be. 2) All peoples think about,
laugh about and worry about the same things. They just have different
clothes, foods, religions and environments.

I've been in high tech all these years. I'm hoping to get back to helping
people after I retire. I think going back to Afghanistan would be a fabulous
contribution.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
It was an experience I'll never regret. And lately I've been humbled by the
opportunities to bring fellow Americans in touch with the real Afghanistan
instead of the place they read about in the news.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
I was Laura Shea in Afghanistan. My husband Kevin, who accompanied me
on the adventure, passed away in 1987. I'd love to hear from anybody
who was there with me or not. Talking about Afghanistan helps ease the
pain of seeing what's happened to it over the years.
Any message for returned volunteers?:
Don't stop volunteering. It keeps you young. It keeps you involved. And it
keeps you from agonizing over the small stuff life presents.

A friend of mine from the University of Missouri, Chris Fuchs, served in the Peace Corps in Kabul, Afghanistan in the early 1970s. If anyone knows of Chris' whereabouts, drop me an e-mail. If you're reading this, Chris, then "howdy."

Any RPCVs interested in a short-term volunteer opportunity in Jordan? The America's Unofficial Ambassadors (AUA) program at Creative Learning is dedicated to expanding and supporting private American citizens' service in the Muslim World. From January 6-15 2012, AUA will lead a group of volunteers to Jordan to support local community development initiatives, learn about Jordanian culture, and meet face-to-face with Jordanian families and university students. Volunteers will spend 4 days working with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for poor families in the north of the country. They will also engage in discussion with civil society groups in Amman and Irbid to learn more about Jordanian culture, share insight into American culture, and discuss challenges common to both societies. The Building Peace by Building Homes trip to Jordan will end with visits to Petra (one of the modern 7 Wonders of the World) and the Dead Sea.
The trip is the first in a series of three Building Peace by Building Homes trips that CL will lead in 2012 [Additional trips to Tajikistan (May) and Indonesia (July) are still being planned]. For more information visit: http://unofficialambassadors.com/get-involved/buil ding-peace-by-building-homes/, or contact AUA trip leader, Andrew Stinson, at AndrewS@creativelearning.org.
