Thanks to the Peace Corps, I changed my career, entering the
architectural engineering field, where I have been working for that past
29 years. My career has taken me Omaha, Singapore, Hong Kong, Los
Angeles, and Hawaii where I lived and worked. Currently (and for the
past ten years), I am with the Smithsonian, working on the construction
of a new telescope facility on Mauna Kea, the highest mountain in Hawaii.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

One of the best times of my life! I met my wife, an Afghan national, there;
we have been married for the past 29 years. The current events have
affected our lives considerably. We hope for peace soon.

for the deaf, pheresis for cancer patients

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

Most enriching, broadening, and personal defining experience; gave me a
strong sense of personal strength and need for cooperation and flexibility.
Realized how difficult it is to instrument change in a short time, even when
one can speak the language. Ideals and concepts, religion and beliefs have
more to do with how we interact.

Milwaukee. In 1982, I changed careers. I completed a doctorate in
liturgical music and went into full-time church music at St. Matthias in
Milwaukee until 1994, and since at Christ the King in Jacksonville, FL.
Very active in arts and civic organizations, enjoy traveling and hosting
friends from the north who travel this way.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

Peace Corps is the bestyjob in the world. I would love to do it again!

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

I would love to hear from any former volunteers from Afghanistan in the
years 1968-73.

We're counted as "Group 9" but that seems to conflict with "Training Group
Number"--trained in Austin TX summer of 1966 (featuring sniper Charles
Whitman on the U-T Tower).

Assisted counterpart teaching "Physics" and using USAID-supplied lab
equipment.
TDY in Jalabad attempting to reinstall an X-ray system moved from
Kandahar---shorted out and never got it to function.

Returned to Kalamazoo MI and started work as Radio / TV Broadcast
"engineer"---still there after 32 years and 5 ownership changes. Now
Assistant Chief Engineer.

Other activities include amateur radio, Red Cross volunteer, church choir
and related activites.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

How did I ever do it? The combination of bicycle travel and illness sure kept
the weight to a never-seen-since level...

2 daughters, Liz and Sarah ('74, '76)
taught high school French in Kalamazoo from '69 - 74, taught ESL at
Western Michigan University from 1975 - present,-- served briefly under
another Afghanistan RPCV, Walter Davison, from an earlier group -- maybe
IV? Program at WMU is called CELCIS and has been a great place to work.
Now I think about retiring, tho.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

I tend to forget the difficulties, the amoebic dysentery, the juies, the
smells, the dirt. I miss the place a lot. It was hard, but great. I feel helpless
now and entertain thoughts of going back sometime to help out with the
rebuilding efforts.
