Randle's appointment means an Oklahoma Sooner touchdown

Foreign policy in Oklahoma once was simple and successful: ''Beat Texas!'' ''Beat Nebraska!'' Times change. Oklahoma's football championships have vanished and a new winning streak has started.

Now hurdling ahead in international business, worldwide sales of Oklahoma merchandise have tripled in a decade to $2.7 billion last year, compared with $970 million in 1987. ...

In this new global context it made imminent sense for the University of Oklahoma to appoint Dr. Rodger Randle as professor of international programs and as associate director of the new OU International Programs Center in Tulsa. ...

First, foreign affairs are not foreign to Randle. Trained as a lawyer, Randle was immersed in world affairs by a Peace Corps stint in Brazil where he mastered Spanish and learned Portuguese. ...

As mayor of Tulsa, Randle molded and now is president of the Sister Cities program that internationally matches urban areas for world understanding and progress. As president of the University Center at Tulsa and Rogers University, Randle led intellectual efforts in many arenas. ...

OU President David Boren, former chair of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and another world leader, craftily appraised Randle's abilities, connections and intellect as perfect for an academic job.

Randle certainly is not a traditional professor. He simply is best suited for an extraordinary challenge of helping Oklahoma reach new world goals.

His appointment was a meaningful touchdown for Oklahoma.

Mr. Randle is not a true "doctor" unless you can count the Juris Doctorate degree he earned (and never put to use). I have never met an attorney that uses the title "doctor." Mr. Randle's credentials as being immersed in world affairs by being in Brazil as a Corps member, is simply ludicrious. His appointment to this position was a simply political payoff. His only goals are for himself and he has enriched himself greatly with his political ties. He was handed a tenure to OU without ever having taught and a salary of $95,000 for teaching a class or two a year. Simply put, he was bought off after the travesty of his presidency at UCT, which brought the institution down. Perhaps this does serve the people of Oklahoma best in keeping him in his little hole.
