BIOGRAPHY

PETER LOWNDS

Peter Lownds (VOICE OF KEROUAC) is a teacher, poet, actor, and presentation skills trainer. Born in New York City, he has lived in Los Angeles since 1982. He has a B.A. in English Literature from Yale, an M.A. in Latin American Studies from U.C.L.A. and is working on his doctorate in Comparative Education at U.C.L.A. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in northeastern Brazil in the mid-sixties and remains a student of Latin American culture and languages. He and his wife Terre, also a teacher, recently purchased a home in the Koreatown section of downtown Los Angeles which they are turning into an international student house. Peter's life has been enriched by travels, reading, a love for people, languages, theatre and film, and by his contact, since childhood, with artists of all kinds. None influenced him more profoundly than Jack Kerouac, whom he met in Northport, N.Y., when Jack was 42 and he was 19. Peter was already a fan of Kerouac's work but, in the course of that summer, they became friends. At one point, Jack told him "You're going to be my successor." That unforgettable statement seemed, intermittently, a burden, a goad to self-transformation, a blessing and a curse. It was, therefore, with great delight, Peter says, that he furnished Jack's "voice" in Go Moan for Man. Speaking Jack's heart, more than thirty years after their fateful encounter, the writer's presentiment finally has made sense.
