Suspected Communist rebels kidnapped a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer shortly before all agency workers were ordered to evacuate the Philippines because of threats to their safety. (The Washington Post) - The Peace Corps, fearful that communist guerrillas may be plotting to harm some of its 261 volunteers in the Philippines, announced it is withdrawing them from the country. The decision concerning the Philippines came after what a State Department official described as a "specific threat" against the Americans.

(UPI) -- Security forces Monday began investigating the kidnapping of a Peace Corps volunteer three weeks ago by communist guerrillas in the central island of Negros. Renato de Villa has formed a civilian-military team to seek peaceful ways of recovering Timothy Swanson, 26, who was kidnapped June 13.

(UPI) -- Communist guerrillas Friday took responsibility for kidnapping a Peace Corps volunteer and a Japanese aid worker in the central Philippines, alleging the victims' organizations were involved in the government's counter insurgency operations. A rebel regional commander said Timothy Swanson and Fumio Mizuno "are safe."

(UPI) -- Communist guerrillas freed a kidnapped U.S. Peace Corps volunteer and a Japanese rural technician Thursday but warned Washington and Tokyo against involvement in operations against the rebels. Timothy Swanson, 27, of Cheyenne, Wyo., was released after some 50 days of captivity.
