Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa rich in minerals but poor otherwise. For many years now there has been a very bad war. People are fighting for control of the country's most important minerals: diamonds. Some rebel groups are mining and then selling diamonds to buy weapons. Many Sierra Leoneans have fled their homes and are now living and suffering in refugee camps.

Our teacher Ms. Edinger lived for two years in Sierra Leone as a Peace Corps Volunteer. This war disturbed Ms. Edinger a great deal so she wanted to do something and told us a bit about Sierra Leone last fall when we were studying immigration (especially forced immigration, slavery.) Recently a classmate came across an article about Sierra Leone and mentioned it to the class. This caused a conversation about what was happening there and Ms. Edinger asked the class if they'd like to help Sierra Leone. Every single person said yes.

Ms. Edinger reminded the class of the visit of Wendy Smith of the International Rescue Committee last fall. She told us about solar powered radios that would be useful for people in the refugee camps to hear news. The class decided to have a bake sale to raise money. They also decided to learn more about Sierra Leone and teach others about it.

On Thursday, June 8th, 2000 we held a bake sale and exhibit for Sierra Leone. We gave out hundreds flyers about Sierra Leone to people from the School community as well as those passing by. We raised over $250 at the bake sale. Several members of our class also raised money in their buildings so all together we raised almost $600. We will give this money to the International Rescue Committee for radios and school supplies. We also are happy that we raised awareness about Sierra Leone.

What America Doesn't Know

by Chelsea, Michele, Danielle, and Morgan

Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa that is having a very bad war. Children from villages are being kidnapped by rebels and being forced to help the rebels by fighting, cooking, caring for them and sometimes even going against their own villages. Some of these children manage to escape. The children who manage to escape go to camps where they get cared for, receive food, shelter, and emotional help. After a while, the people who run the camps feel they need to return the children to their own villages. Some of the villages don't want these children back because of the crimes they have committed. We learned a lot about this from Wendy Smith who works with the International Rescue Committee. The IRC is working in several locations in Sierra Leone to help these children return to their villages.

There are so many other horrible things that are happening in this country. Many people in the US do not know of this because there is so little media on it.

We made a poster for our bake sale and exhibit on Thursday, June 8, 2000, with some recent articles in the New York Times and Time Magazine on Sierra Leone to help people at Dalton learn more.

America has paid a lot of attention to other countries and has forgotten about Sierra Leone. This is what America doesn't know.

Thank you very much for trying to help my native country - Sierra Leone. Please try to tell the whole world about the war and its after effects.
My elder brother was killed during the war.
My name is Kenenth Kuyembeh. I live presently in Moldova with my own family. But my old and sick mother still lives in Sierra Leone together with my four sisters and two littke brothers.
Can you please help us to move to the U.S.A.?
