Official Peace Corps Information on Guatemala Program
Guatemala is a land of lush forests, fertile valleys, misty lakes, massive volcanoes and the remnants of the great Mayan civilization that flourished for over a thousand years. The Peace Corps program in Guatemala, which began in 1963, is one of the Peace Corps' oldest. Since the program started, close to 4,000 Volunteers have served in Guatemala.
Today Volunteers are focusing their efforts on aiding rural communities. They aim to help rural Guatemalans move from bare subsistence to small-scale commercial agriculture, manage and conserve natural resources, improve health and nutrition, and increase off-farm incomes. Volunteers work in 11 distinct projects in agriculture, environment, health and business development. Across all sectors, the Peace Corps program in Guatemala is integrating the principles of disaster preparation and mitigation.
Just as important as the Volunteer's primary job is the cultural exchange that occurs with the Guatemalan people. Volunteers live together with Guatemalans and teach each other about their histories, languages, and cultures.
Peace Corps has a very good reputation in Guatemala, built by Volunteers and staff over nearly four decades. Volunteers will have the rare opportunity to learn about this magical country, one of our closest neighbors to the south.

Hi. I'm thinking of travelling to Guatemala in October. I'm female, and will be travelling alone. Any advice on whether this is safe, where to go, what to see, etc? Would any current PCVs be interested in showing me around?
Thanks, Reggie Spaulding email: rsspaulding@ucdavis.edu
