dear friends,
Hope the new year is treating you all well. I spent the last three weeks in Geneva visiting my parents and am preparing to leave for Guatemala tomorrow. It'll be a relief to return to warmer weather! But I had a good time here wandering around, eating chocolate, riding the cable car up to Mont Blanc, and trying to fake being able to speak French- basically by puckering my lips every time I spoke. It doesn't work. Anyway, I had a good, low-key New Years with my family and some old family friends. We watched the fireworks from downtown on their balcony, which had an excellent view, and then we drank a ridiculous amount of champagne. When we finally managed to drag ourselves out the door to go home, we hopped on a tram to go one stop because all the trams and buses were free that night.
Speaking of transportation, the Swiss are so efficient that it's almost scary. On the highway, they have radars mounted to cameras that will take a picture of your licence plate if you're speeding, and then a couple of days later you get a ticket in the mail. Many a third world driver would be buried in tickets in this county. Still, it's a lovely little city and not a bad travel destination- better in the summer, report my parents, who are looking to hang around for a while.
As for Guatemala, the invitation to visit is always extended for intrepid travelers. I'm looking forward to this year, battling the bureaucracy and motivating my groups, but I'll be sure to make time for guests. As further enticement, I'm attaching pictures of my fun-filled life. I hope this works, 'cause I've never done this before.
Well, take care, everyone, have a truly spectacular year, and drop me a line if your end of the world is still intact. much love, marina
