Update on Peace Corps-Ghana
The Peace Corps is now in its 33rd year of continuous service to Ghana and continues to enjoy widespread official and public support. More than 3,000 volunteers have served in Ghana to date with some 120 volunteers currently there serving as teachers, or working in health, environment, or small business development projects. The current Peace Corps/Ghana Director is Harriet Lancaster.
In-country training for the current group of volunteers began in June 1995 for teachers; and in September 1995 for those volunteers training in small business assistance, forestry, nursery management, water sanitation, and youth development projects. According to Gil Swift, Desk Officer for Peace Corps/Ghana, the average age for this group of trainees is 25 years old with an equal mix of male and female. Training is taking place at Saltpond on the Ghanaian coast.
