U.S. Peace Corps in Morocco to Add Volunteers: Ten for New Business Development Program and Five in Education
Saturday, March 27, 1999
(Siffa, Er-Rachidia Province, Morocco) The U.S. Peace Corps will be expanding its presence in Morocco by fifteen volunteers next year: ten for a new business development project and five more in existing education projects. This increase was announced during U.S. First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton visit today to the Siffa Maternal and Child Health Clinic, a typical Peace Corps Morocco volunteer site.
The Peace Corps has long been active in promoting access to basic health care in Morocco, including support to the Moroccan Ministry of Health’s effort to teach rural women about family planning and maternal health. This clinic is important to the entire region, attracting women patients from miles around Siffa. In partnership with the governor’s office, the village is planning to construct a new birthing center soon. In addition, Ministry of Health teams regularly visit the clinic during vaccination drives, using trucks, medicines and other equipment and supplies donated by USAID.
The Peace Corps has been in Morocco since 1963, with over 6,500 volunteers having served during those 35 years. Currently, 127 Peace Corps volunteers are working throughout Morocco.
At the clinic, Mrs. Clinton visited with doctors and nurses and with women from the village of Siffa, as well as with a 24-year old Peace Corps volunteer named Lisa Bernasek whose project is to teach rural Moroccan women about family planning, safe motherhood practices, and general preventative medicine.
