Sidney MacDonald Baker, MD

Sidney MacDonald Baker is a practicing physician with an interest in the nutritional, biochemical, and environmental aspects of chronic illness in children. He recently spoke at the First Annual Life-Spanâ Training during the weekend of December 4-6, 1999.

He serves as a consultant/advisor to Immunologics in the area of food allergy testing. Dr. Baker is one of the reasons why HealthTrust® selected Immunologics to provide its Food Allergy Testing in the new "Live It or Diet" Weight Loss Program that will be launched in February of 2000. Dr. Baker will consult with and be utilized by Immunologies, providing expertise when needed to help launch a successful lab testing service with HealthTrust®.

He is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Environmental Medicine. His early medical career was as a as a Peace Corps volunteer in Chad, Africa, where he helped develop methods and a curriculum for retraining health workers who were isolated from supervisory professionals, supervised health consultations, and conducted a teaching program in midwifery.

After returning to the United States, Dr. Baker worked as a physician and then with the Gesell Institute of Human Development, which conducts clinical and research programs in child development, vision, nutrition, and environmental medicine.

He went on to serve as Senior Clinician and Director of Research at the Princeton Biocenter at Princeton University, as well as Coordinator of the Annual CME Nutrition Seminars held by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine.

He has a long standing interest in the development of computer software that assists doctors in describing patients as individuals and in having access to all the detailed information that is important in decision-making for people with chronic health problems. He is the President of MCARES Development Corporation, a software developer.

His dedication and success in the medical software field led to a grant from the Autism Research Institute to create a computer database of information about histories, laboratory results, and treatment responses of a group of children with developmental problems in the autism spectrum. The database is unique in that it will, with appropriate easures to protect confidentiality, be accessible to many investigators doing research in this field. He is the Medical Director of Children’s Development Database, and Coordinator of the Autism Database Project for the Defeat Autism Now Group.

Dr. Baker focuses on the biologic aspects of health, and has written numerous articles, essays, and abstracts for both lay and scientific readers. In addition, he is a co-author of two books, Child Behavior (with Ames and Ilg), and The Years from Ten to Fourteen (with Ames). He is the author of the book Detoxification and Healing, as well as two monographs, Folic Acid and Biomedical Assessment Options for Children with Autism and Related Problems.

His latest book, The Circadian Prescription, will be published in April of 2000.
