She first met her husband in Bamian, Afghanistan, where she was a Peace Corps volunteer and they later married in Beirut, Lebanon, where Mr. Callahan was assigned to the American Embassy as a foreign service officer with the United States Information Agency. Mrs. Callahan, along with her husband and family, lived in Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia, Yemen, the Philippines, Iraq, South Africa, Nigeria, and India. During those years, Mrs. Callahan was often a teacher of English as a second language. Later, during her husband's career in the State Department, she also served in the U.S. Consulates in Lagos, Nigeria, and New Delhi, India.

NORTH FALMOUTH — Susan (Long) Callahan, beloved wife of James Callahan of New Silver Beach in North Falmouth and Bethesda, Md., died quietly in the home near the water that she loved, on June 4, 2008, after a long illness.
She was the mother of Kevin Callahan of Denver, Colo., Robyn Callahan of Waltham, and David Callahan of Easthampton. She was also the sister of Frank Long of St. Augustine, Fla., David Long of Miami, Fla., and Kayte Long of Whitesburg, Ga.; and aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Callahan was born in Fairbury, Neb., but grew up with her family in Venezuela and Brazil. She attended the University of California at Berkley, the American University of Beirut and the University of South Africa. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, June 9, 2008, in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 584 W. Falmouth Highway (Route 28A), West Falmouth. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 481 Quaker Road, North Falmouth, followed by burial at North Falmouth Cemetery.
