A Middletown couple is currently volunteering with the Peace Corps, teaching English to future teachers at a university.
Richard Erickson, 66, and his wife, Renee Erickson, 65, departed for a two-year service stint in China July 1. The Ericksons will be living with a host family for the first three months of their tour to fully immerse themselves in Chinese culture and language. The pair will start teaching once they complete volunteer training in October.
The Ericksons have extensive backgrounds as educators. Richard Erickson, a Fulbright scholar, worked at Marple Newtown High School and West Chester University. Renee Erickson worked at Media's Benchmark School and has volunteered for the Delaware County Literacy Council.
The Ericksons said their service was prompted by an encounter they had with a family in Macedonia while on a trip to visit their daughter Lee.
"(The family) was disappointed that their Peace Corps volunteer had not been replaced and we thought we might apply and be that replacement," they said.
The Ericksons join the 319 Pennsylvania residents currently serving in the Peace Corps. Five percent of the 8,079 Americans serving in the Peace Corps are aged 50 or older.

"It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them." |
