"We still do not have the definite announcement from Peace Corps Washington, but I will say (from the general consensus and from everything we have been told and are preparing for) sometime within the next few weeks the Peace Corps Georgia volunteers will be closing our service. We will not be returning to Georgia. Some are planning on traveling before returning home, some are attempting to get into new Peace Corps programs immediately, but the majority of us are preparing ourselves to return to America. Personally, I myself am at a loss for what to do now. Making the commitment to become a PCV was a decision I took very seriously and considered for a long time. Despite the many problems and difficulties I encountered in Georgia, in the short time I was there I discovered a lot to love about this small place of proud, hospitable people. It is very difficult to leave before my service could even begin and I'm not sure I want to enlist in a new program, especially since I would have to wait a full year to leave, which makes it difficult for me to make any long term commitments back in the states-- especially in where to work and live."

It is very difficult to leave before my service could even begin and I'm not sure I want to enlist in a new program, especially since I would have to wait a full year to leave, which makes it difficult for me to make any long term commitments back in the states-- especially in where to work and live.
I gained so much from my short time in Georgia and sitting here in this Armenian hotel, I'm at a loss when I try to imagine what's in store. I know that when a door closes, somewhere God opens a window, that I am always in His hands, He has a greater plan for me than I could ever imagine and this will all work out in the end-- but right now, it's pretty bleak (and I left my bible at my permanent site in Kharagauli, so I don't even have that comfort right now).
I'm dealing with this situation the way I've always dealt with problems, by spending a LOT of time listening to music. I watch the news in our hotel room and have to look away because I can't bear to see the destruction of the Georgian streets I walked, I leave conversations because I get overwhelmed by the uncertainty we all face, and I often find myself staring out at the Armenian countryside wondering what I can possibly do to help Georgia now.
But, we all need distractions so we try to keep our minds off all of it with excursions into the nearby town, movies, our own mini Olympics, and by trying to stay positive and laugh. A continued source of humor for us is our daily laundry adventures. We have to do our laundry in the jaccuzi tubs some of us have in our rooms. Right now my friend Casey Walters is here getting some Tide to go do a load of laundry with some other PCVs. (He wanted me to throw his name in my blog so there's my shoutout to Casey and his Rockstar hair

| Dodd vows to filibuster Surveillance Act Senator Chris Dodd vowed to filibuster the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that helped this administration violate the civil liberties of Americans. "It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them." |
