To be selected to participate in the tour the Namibian youth had to express their own understanding of their own culture that they identify through art such as poem- or story-writing, song composition and drawing or painting. Some 40 Namibian learners, accompanied by nine US Peace Corps Volunteer facilitators, will travel to Swakopmund, Omaruru, Otjiwarongo, Rundu and Shambyu, and the Mahangu Game Park in eastern Kavango from today until the end of this month. “This year’s tour was open to Namibian students in grades 6-10. Each year, the students are presented with a theme and are encouraged to enter the Cultural Expression competition. This contest is an opportunity for learners to reflect on their own cultures and cultural practices, as well as to share their creativity and culture with both Namibians and Americans,” he said.

This year’s Diversity Tour at the American Cultural Centre was launched on Thursday with award-winning art and essay learners from different schools invited to take part in the tour in cooperation with the American Peace Corps Volunteers.
“The 2008 theme for the Diversity Tour is Diversity in Namibian Culture, with the intention that Namibian learners will immerse themselves in different cultural environments to learn the significance of valuing their own culture while also finding the respect and appreciation for other cultures,” said the director of the American Cultural Centre at the launch.
The annual Diversity Tour, which is administered by US Peace Corps Volunteers from all over Namibia, offers a unique opportunity for Namibian learners to reflect on their own cultural practices, to share their creativity and culture with both Namibians and Americans, and to examine the ways in which their actions and lives impact the health of themselves, those around them, and the environment.
“The Peace Corps Volunteers achieve this goal by focusing on raising awareness of diversity issues in Namibia, creating a better understanding of diversity in the United States and increasing and developing educational opportunities which promote diversity,” he said.
According to him the tour is a life changing opportunity for all involved, especially the Namibian learners – as most would otherwise not have had the opportunity to benefit from the activities and experiences the tour provides.
“These include going on a game drive, playing in the ocean for the first time and perhaps most importantly engaging in meaningful interactions and form strong friendships with fellow youth from different cultural backgrounds yet the same national heritage. It is through this last point that the tour chiefly succeeds in breaking down tribal stereotypes and unifying the youth of Namibia,” Castillo asserted.
To be selected to participate in the tour the Namibian youth had to express their own understanding of their own culture that they identify through art such as poem- or story-writing, song composition and drawing or painting.

| Dodd vows to filibuster Surveillance Act Senator Chris Dodd vowed to filibuster the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that helped this administration violate the civil liberties of Americans. "It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them." |
