Ex-congressmen Hall to promote global anti-poverty efforts
Former Ohio congressmen John Kasich (a Columbus-area Republican) and Tony Hall (a Dayton-area Democrat) are teaming up for a new bipartisan effort to educate Ohio voters and engage the presidential candidates on issues of international poverty and global diseases. The pair will make appearances across Ohio to increase the visibility of international poverty and health issues like AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, says Alex Howe, a spokesman for ONE Vote '08. Former Congressman Tony Hall of Ohio was ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand in the 1960's.

WASHINGTON -- Former Ohio congressmen John Kasich (a Columbus-area Republican) and Tony Hall (a Dayton-area Democrat) are teaming up for a new bipartisan effort to educate Ohio voters and engage the presidential candidates on issues of international poverty and global diseases.
The pair will make appearances across Ohio to increase the visibility of international poverty and health issues like AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, says Alex Howe, a spokesman for ONE Vote '08.
The group is a spinoff of the ONE campaign, co-founded by U2 frontman Bono. The political effort is targeting Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania and other battleground states to "showcase the opportunity the next president has to make a lifesaving, game-changing difference in the fight against extreme poverty and global disease," a press release says,
"Saving lives and ending suffering is the moral thing to do, but it will also make our country more secure and more respected in the process," said Hall, who left Congress in 2002 to become the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture.

| Peace Corps Suspends Program in Bolivia Turmoil began in Bolivia three weeks ago sparked by President Evo Morales' pledge to redistribute wealth from the east to the country's poorer highlands. Peace Corps has withdrawn all volunteers from the country because of "growing instability." Morales has thrown out US Ambassador Philip Goldberg accusing the American government of inciting the violence. This is not the first controversy surrounding Goldberg's tenure as US ambassador to Bolivia. |
