Yesan Middle School in Yesan-eup, Yesan County, South Chungcheong Province are excited that Kathleen Stephens arrives as US Ambassador to Korea
When she was in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province as a member of Peace Corps 3 years ago, Kathleen Stephens (55), the new U.S. ambassador to Korea, practiced Korean martial art Taekwondo. Yu Bong-ho (63), an advisor to the South Chungcheong Provincial Taekwondo Association, recalls teaching her for six months. "I still remember the 22-year-old American woman practicing Taekwondo kicks 33 years ago,” Yu said. “I'm glad to see that naive woman come back as ambassador. I’d like to meet her soon to talk about the good old days." Kathleen Stephens, appointed US Ambassador to South Korea, served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Korea.

U.S. Envoy’s Old Haunt Excited at Her Arrival
When she was in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province as a member of Peace Corps 3 years ago, Kathleen Stephens (55), the new U.S. ambassador to Korea, practiced Korean martial art Taekwondo. Yesan Middle School in Yesan-eup, Yesan County, South Chungcheong Province were excited when Stephens arrived on Wednesday. The envoy taught English at the school for two years from 1975, using her Korean name Shim Eun-kyung.
Former colleagues and students who stayed in touch are looking forward to seeing her again. She has repeatedly said she will come to see them.
South Chungcheong Provincial Office of Education and Yesan Middle School are busy preparing for the event. They are to present her with a certificate as an “honorary teacher” and show her slides of old photos. Stephens will attend an English class to bring back memories and give a special lecture in Korean to students.
