SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Peru's former president says cutting back on social government programs amid fears of a global recession is a mistake.
Alejandro Toledo is urging governments across Latin America to provide healthcare, education, potable water and electricity to poor people who already are feeling the financial crunch.
Latin American stocks have been dragged down severely by the global economic crisis, as investors flee emerging markets.
Toledo says exports, remittances and tourism will be among the hardest hit.
He made the comments Thursday after meeting with the president of the Dominican Republic. Toledo was invited to the Caribbean country to attend a local Chamber of Commerce event.
