How Driehaus won his Seat in Congress
The campaign worked! Jeff Hirsh: "One thing which helped Steve Driehaus big time, and he knew this going into the race, was having Barack Obama at the head of the ticket. The reality is Obama was a bigger help to Driehaus than Hillary Clinton would have been if she was the Democratic nominee." The big African-American Obama turnout voted for Driehaus as well. State Rep. Steve Driehaus, Congressman-Elect, 1st District: "I just happened to be running in a year when the Democratic base was mobilized. Certainly, President Elect Obama mobilized that base in a way we have never seen them mobilized. And that was just fantastic." The Driehaus name also helped. It's well known on the west side. Steve was a state rep, his dad a Democratic party leader who passed away a month ago. Senegal RPCV Steve Driehus was elected to Congress in 2008. Driehaus had served in the Ohio House of Representatives since 2001 and has served as Minority Whip since 2005.

A Look at How Driehaus Beat Chabot
Last Update: 11/05 6:14 pm
The winner in Ohio's First Congressional District is once again named Steve, but it's not the same Steve who has won the race the past seven times. This time, Democrat Steve Driehaus defeated Republican Steve Chabot.
But as Local 12 Reporter Jeff Hirsh shows us, another name played a big role in the race... Barack Obama.
"Well, thank you very much, my name is Steve Driehaus and I am honored to be the next congressman from the First Congressional District of Ohio."
It's been 14 years since a Democrat has represented this district ... most of the City of Cincinnati and Western Hamilton County. Driehaus linked incumbent Republican Steve Chabot to President George W. Bush, while simultaneously acknowledging that everybody likes Chabot as a friendly guy.
"Steve Chabot is not a bad person. He's just been in Washington too long."

Need more proof... check this: Four years ago, in Hamilton County, President Bush beat John Kerry, 53-47 per cent. This year, that flipped, with Obama defeating McCain by basically the same margin. Which helped carry over into the Driehaus-Chabot race ... and helped carry Driehaus to victory.
The Driehaus name also helped. It's well known on the west side. Steve was a state rep, his dad a Democratic party leader who passed away a month ago.
Clare Driehaus, Steve's Mother: "Im just extremely proud and happy and my husband I'm sure is with us in spirit. I feel his presence with us as well."
And while Steve Driehaus is off to Washington, another Driehaus is heading for Columbus. Sister Denise won Steve's seat in the state legislature.
