Peace Corps Volunteer Kay Oursler heading back to Tanzania

Oursler has raised more than $ 60, 000 to meet a dollar-for-dollar challenge grant and is returning to Uhekule, Tanzania, to build an orphanage. “I really appreciate everyone’s help; the support has been amazing.” Oursler says. Oursler, 67, served in Uhekule during her time in the Peace Corps and was moved by the situation of 116 orphans in the village of 1, 450. Most of the children’s parents died from AIDS. She returned to Arkansas from Africa in December.

Kay Oursler, the Hot Springs Village resident and former Peace Corps volunteer, has met the challenge.

Her story was the subject of an Aug. 26 Style section feature.

The funds raised will go toward the building and operation of the orphanage, which will be run by Roman Catholic nuns.

Oursler will write a newsletter from Tanzania, which will be posted on a new Web site that is being launched, www. bibikay. com. The villagers call Oursler Bibi Kay — grandmother Kay.

Donations are still being accepted to assist with operating costs for the orphanage and to purchase milk goats. Checks for tax-deductible contributions can be mailed to Praecavemus Foundation, 128 Wilder Ave., Los Gatos, Calif. 95030. Add “ BBK orphanage"on the memo line.

Peace Corps has withdrawn all volunteers from Bolivia because of "growing instability" and the expulsion of US Ambassador Philip Goldberg after Bolivian President Evo Morales accused the American government of inciting violence in the country. This is not the first controversy surrounding Goldberg's tenure as US ambassador to Bolivia. Latest: Some volunteers have returned to Bolivia on their own to complete their projects.

PCVs Evacuated from Georgia Date: August 19 2008 No: 1254 PCVs Evacuated from Georgia
The Peace Corps has announced that all Volunteers and trainees serving in the Republic of Georgia are safe and they have been temporarily relocated to neighboring Armenia. Read the analysis by one RPCV on how Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili believed that he could launch a lightning assault on South Ossetia and reclaim the republic without substantial grief from Moscow and that Saakashvili's statements once the war began demonstrated that he expected real Western help in confronting Russia.
