Kathleen Stephens says South Korea's democratization process sets a good example for other countries around the world
The remarks from Ambassador Kathleen Stephens came during her visit to a national cemetery in the southwestern city of Gwangju where hundreds of people killed in a 1980 democratic uprising are buried. As a former Peace Corps volunteer to Korea, Stephens said she still remembers the mood of the 1970s and 1980s in Korea, when the country was under the dictatorship of then President Park Chung-hee and his successor Chun Doo-hwan. She said it was moving to see how people cherish the memory of those who fell victim to those regimes.
