Shays Uncertain About His Future
A friend told him to take some time off to take stock, maybe a whole year. Shays said that after so long as a public servant -- with a government paycheck -- "that's not an option that's available to me." He did say he'd be willing to consider working inside the administration of President-elect Barack Obama, but he said he hasn't reached out in any significant way for a potential executive-branch position. Shays said there had only been brief contact. Congressman Chris Shays of Connecticut served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Fiji in the 1960's.

Rep. Chris Shays is still a congressman until the start of next month. But he's got no office and no staff -- just the technical authority to cast a vote in this unusually late lame-duck session.
When I met him for an interview this afternoon, it was in the basement grill of the capital's Republican club. "Welcome to my office," he said when I arrived at the table he was using for meetings.
Shays is still thinking a lot about the campaign he lost last month to Democrat Jim Himes. And he's not sure what he'll do next. He did say he'd be willing to consider working inside the administration of President-elect Barack Obama, but he said he hasn't reached out in any significant way for a potential executive-branch position. Shays said there had only been brief contact.
Much of his time now is being spent finding work for the 18 members of his former staff, he said.
