Himes endorses Shays for Peace Corps director
Thursday, December 18, 2008
Congressman-elect Jim Himes today announced that he has endorsed his opponent in the November election, Congressman Christopher Shays, for appointment as director of the Peace Corps in the Obama Administration.Mr. Himes led the rest of the Connecticut delegation in the House of Representatives in writing to President-elect Obama.
"As I've noted many times, Chris Shays is a man of grace and courage who served the Fourth District well for many years," said Himes. "Though we disagree on some fundamental issues about the direction of our country, we both agree that American idealism and moral leadership is a force for great good in the world. As a former Peace Corps volunteer and a strong believer in America's special obligation to work toward peace and freedom, Congressman Shays would do a wonderful job of representing our country to those nations of the world served by the Peace Corps.
"Representatives John Larson, Rosa DeLauro, Joe Courtney, and Chris Murphy joined Congressman-elect Himes in signing the letter to the President-elect.The joint letter notes that Shays started his career in public service as a Peace Corps volunter in Fiji in 1968-70 and goes on to praise Shays for his extensive foreign travel and his internationalist perspective. In keeping with the tone of unity and bipartisanship set by President-elect Obama, the entire delegation of Democratic representatives recommended Shays, the outgoing Republican representative for Fairfield County, they said in a release.
