Chief Craig Tieszen will retire July 20 after 32 years in law enforcement, all with the Rapid City Police Department. "I'm getting used to the idea (of retirement)," Tieszen said. He plans to stay in Rapid City. So far, Tieszen said, his only major plan for retirement is a vacation to China this summer. "Then, I'll look at my options after that," he said.

RAPID CITY - When the new Rapid City mayor takes office July 2, one of his first jobs will be appointing a new Rapid City police chief.
[Excerpt]
Chief Craig Tieszen will retire July 20 after 32 years in law enforcement, all with the Rapid City Police Department.
"I'm getting used to the idea (of retirement)," Tieszen said.
He plans to stay in Rapid City.
So far, Tieszen said, his only major plan for retirement is a vacation to China this summer.
"Then, I'll look at my options after that," he said.
Mayor Jim Shaw said he could appoint the new police chief as one of his last official duties but prefers to let the new mayor make the decision.
"They (the new mayor) will be working with that person, so it makes sense that they appoint them," he said. "It's just better that they (the new mayor) make the choice."
Shaw said his main concern is for the police department to have a smooth transition to a new leader.
So that task of appointing the new leader is left to either Sam Kooiker or Alan Hanks.
