Ecuador RPCV Bob Kierlin creates fund to help patients from developing countries
Bob Kierlin met his late wife, Stefannie, while serving in the Peace Corps in Ecuador in the mid-1960s. The then-Venezuelan Stefannie shared his interest in global health, in particular care for children, said Kierlin, a former Minnesota state senator and chairman of the board of Fastenal Co. in Winona, Minn. When Stefannie died in January 1999, Kierlin became a sponsor of Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation’s Global Health Initiative and started a fund to support health care for patients from developing nations, along with health missions to countries.

“I spent five weeks as a kid in Gillette Hospital in St. Paul,” Kierlin explained. “I was born with a tipped head.”
The couple provided some funding to Gundersen Lutheran’s neonatal unit to help sick newborns.
And when Stefannie died in January 1999, Kierlin became a sponsor of Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation’s Global Health Initiative and started a fund to support health care for patients from developing nations, along with health missions to countries.
In more than a decade, the Kierlin Fund has helped patients such as Juan Ricardo de Leon Poron, who was able to recover from a spinal cord injury and return home to Guatemala.
It has aided patients from Nepal, Mexico, Bolivia, India, Guatemala, El Salvador, Kenya and Nicaragua. It has supported medical missions to Peru, Sudan, Haiti, Mexico and other countries.
“This is an awesome fund,” said David Amborn, senior director of foundation.
Kierlin said he plans to continue to fund the Global Health Initiative in the future.
“It is a project that I strongly believe in, and I think Gundersen Lutheran does a remarkable job with the use of the funds,” Kierlin said.
