WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama finds out Wednesday whether he gained any Republican support for a two-year, $825 billion economic recovery package.
[Excerpt]
Rep. Tom Petri, R-Fond du Lac, said Obama "was at the top of his game" in a closed-door meeting Tuesday with GOP congressional members.
But Petri left the meeting still undecided about the package.
"We really do need to think this through to make sure it is as effective as possible. I want to be part of the solution," he said.
Petri said the recovery package likely will be discussed at a meeting that Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emmanuel, has scheduled for Tuesday night with Petri and several other Republicans.
Democrats appear to have enough votes to pass the measure without Republican help. But Obama, who campaigned on bridging the divide between Democrats and Republicans, wants GOP backing.
GOP leaders say the package, which the House is scheduled to vote on Wednesday, needs more business tax cuts and less big government spending.
The bill includes approximately $550 billion in direct spending and $275 billion in tax provisions intended to provide support for workers, businesses, and local and state governments and soften the economic downturn.
