Washington, Sept 30 - Sargent Shriver, director of the Peace Corps, says it has been necessary to bring home only 178 of the 4,000 sent overseas.
Mr. Shriver, in testimony before a HOuse Appropriations subcommittee made public today, said 26 had to return for medical reason. Seix peace corpsmen died in automobile and plane crashes.
In addtion, 31 came back for "compassionate reasons," such as a death in the family.
The director said 115 were "failures" in personal adjustment.
Mr. Shriver also testified that plans for sending Peace Corps volunteers to Indonesia "are annoying the Communists extraordinarily."
"There isn't a day goes by in Indonesia," Mr. Shriver said, "that the Communists are not using columns of newspaper print to denounce the Peace Corps."
Mr. Shriver rejected a request by representative Otto E. Passman, Democrat of Louisiana, that the Peace Corps remove from its National Advisory Council a Presbyterian minister who allegedly had a record of activity with Communist front groups.
Mr. Shriver said in his testimony that two exhaustive investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation showed "nothing which would indicate this man was a communist or a fellow traveler." The council members was identified as the Rev. James H. Robinson, who also is head of an organization called "Crossroads Africa." The group conducts a studnet exchange program between the United States and Africa.
