Obituary for Guinea Country Director Henry Robert Norman
Mr. Norman left his law practice in Syracuse to establish a U.S. Peace Corps program in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. Henry served as executive director of the Maryland Health Maintenance Committee creating HMOs in the State of Maryland. In the mid 70s he was the director of the Rural Health Program in Kabul, Afghanistan which was cut short by the Communist take over of the country. Mr. Norman was the former president of Volunteers in Technical Assistance, Arlington, Virginia, a not for profit volunteer organization with projects throughout Africa, Asia, and Central America.

March 12, 2009 Henry Robert Norman, 79, of Freehold Township, NJ, died Thursday at home. Mr. Norman was born, and raised in Syracuse, NY, and had lived in Africa, Afghanistan, and Washington D.C. before moving to Freehold Township in 2005.
Mr. Norman was a 1951 graduate of Western Maryland College going on to graduate from George Washington University Law School in 1953. Henry was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Signal Corps in France during the Korean Conflict. He was the 1961 Democratic Nominee for Mayor of Syracuse.
Mr. Norman left his law practice in Syracuse to establish a U.S. Peace Corps program in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. Surviving: wife, Sophie Norman of Freehold Township, N; a daughter and son-in-law, Corinne and James Clark of Tinton Falls, NJ; one granddaughter, Alexandra Clark; two brothers, George Norman of Frederick, Maryland, Rudolph Norman of Cane Ridge, Tennessee. Visiting at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Rd., (Route 524) Freehold Township on Sunday, March 15, 2009 from 2: to 6 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at the funeral home on Monday, March 16, 2009 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent NJ.
