After taking responsibility for teaching the multimedia course, he said, he put his ``own touches or flair'' into requirements to use technology in projects and reach learning goals. Frye said hearing that he had won the award about two weeks ago ``made my semester." ``I was pretty elated,'' he said.

ONEONTA _ The power of persuasion plus the power of technology in a class at SUNY Oneonta added up to an award for excellence, a professor said Wednesday.
Joshua Frye has been named the recipient of the college's 2009 Academic Excellence Award for the Use of Instructional Technology.
He is an assistant professor in the communication arts department at the State University College at Oneonta. The honor carries a $1,000 prize and other recognition.
Frye said the award is for the course ``Creating Persuasive Campaigns,'' a staple in the communications department. In that course, teams of students create persuasive campaigns for the semester and participate in a competition, where the audience decides which campaign is the best.
After taking responsibility for teaching the multimedia course, he said, he put his ``own touches or flair'' into requirements to use technology in projects and reach learning goals.
Frye said hearing that he had won the award about two weeks ago ``made my semester."
``I was pretty elated,'' he said.
The award is a personal honor, Frye said. But it also reflects on how the course relies on campus resources, such as the SUNY Oneonta Teaching, Learning and Technology Center, and community connections, such as the Family Service Association, which is the focus of a student project, he said.
Frye will receive the award at a dessert reception at the Craven Lounge of the Morris Conference Center at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 19. Frye and his students will offer a presentation about their use of technology in multimedia marketing campaigns. Admission to the event is free, and the public is welcome.
Frye joined SUNY Oneonta in 2007. He holds a doctorate in communication from Purdue University, where he worked previously as a researcher. He has a master's degree from Marquette University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota. Previously, he taught at Purdue and Yale universities, and he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras.
The Academic Excellence Award for the Use of Instructional Technology, in its eighth year, is sponsored in part by the gifts to the Alumni Annual Fund. Frye will receive $1,000 from the College's Fund for Academic Excellence, and the communication arts department will receive funds to purchase technology or to present a distinguished speaker on technology.
