Kurth’s inspiration to become a Peace Corps Volunteer stemmed from her local voluntary involvement aimed at making a difference in people’s lives, and from the modeling of strong community service she received from her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Buford Smith of Effie.

Granddaughter of Effie woman serving in Guyana with Peace Corps
Lindsay Kurth, 25, granddaughter of Mrs. Irene McNeal Smith of Effie, and of the late Honorable J. Buford Smith, former Louisiana state representative, has been accepted into the United States Peace Corps.
Kurth is the daughter of Robb and Lisa Smith Kurth (formerly of Effie) of Fort Collins, Colo.
Kurth departed on February 22, 2009, for her Peace Corps placement in Guyana, South America.
Kurth is residing in Windsor Castle, Guyana with a Guyanese host family for approximately eight weeks while receiving training before relocating to her specific local Peace Corp site assignment.
Kurth’s appointment is as a Community Education Promoter within Guyana, where she will work to create and maintain relationships used to support the Guyanese community through continuing education. Kurth’s assignment will continue for 27 months.
Kurth holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from University of Northern Colorado and is a Delta Zeta Sorority alum. Since her graduation in 2005, Kurth has actively participated in philanthropic efforts throughout Northern Colorado as a member of the international service organization, Beta Sigma Phi.
Kurth taught pre-kindergarten until 2007 and more recently worked as chief administrative assistant for Dohn Construction of Fort Collins.
Kurth’s inspiration to become a Peace Corps Volunteer stemmed from her local voluntary involvement aimed at making a difference in people’s lives, and from the modeling of strong community service she received from her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Buford Smith of Effie.
The Peace Corps was designated by President John F. Kennedy in his efforts to make a contributing difference in the quality of lives of the underprivileged in Third World countries.
