Paraguay and the Peace Corps
If you remember, Will Osterholz, 24, arrived in Paraguay, South America, in September of 2008. He started his time living there with a host family. Now, he has his own small home. He constructed the cement block home -- complete with a tile roof -- himself. It has one room with an attached porch. It is only 9-feet by 18-feet, but it gives him more privacy than when he first arrived. His host family had seven members in their two room home. They lived in one room while Will lived in the other room.
Will is an agro-forestry volunteer with a 28-month commitment. In his attempt to help the native people, he is working to guide the local farmers to do different things with their crops. Sugar cane is their main crop. It is a perennial that is good for six years of producing the cane. The Peace Corp is trying to get the farmers to diversify their crops so they wouldn't have to depend on one crop for their income. The farmers get paid once or twice a year for the whole year. Imagine having to budget that payment to last a whole year!
Over her Christmas 2008 break from teaching religion at Loyola High School in Chicago, Katie Osterholz traveled to Paraguay, to see her brother, Will. She visited his remote farming village where they spent Christmas together. Quite a change from the Chicago weather, temperatures in Paraguay this time of year reach into the 100's.
Will and Katie also traveled to Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Another highlight of their trip was visiting Iguazu Falls, some of the largest waterfalls in the world.
