Mr. Lugar's backing is considered crucial to Mr. Hill's nomination because it would provide other moderate Republican senators political cover to vote for him. Mr. Lugar is the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee. A confirmation hearing was planned for March 25. Also in Mr. Hill's corner are three former Iraq ambassadors: Ryan C. Crocker, Zalmay Khalilzad and John D. Negroponte. The three wrote a letter supporting Mr. Hill for the post and urging the Senate to approve his nomination. "We need his experience during this crucial time in Iraq," they wrote in the letter. "His previous experiences will serve him greatly when addressing extreme challenges in Iraq." Christopher R. Hill, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs and former U.S. ambassador to South Korea, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Cameroon.

WASHINGTON: Christopher R. Hill, a veteran diplomat, won the support of Senator Richard G. Lugar on Tuesday to become the next U.S. ambassador to Iraq, even as other Republican senators urged President Barack Obama to withdraw the nomination.

Mr. Hill is best known for his role in the Bush administration as the chief U.S. negotiator in disarmament talks with North Korea. The negotiations stalled on a technical issue, and Republican critics said Mr. Hill was too willing to make concessions to the Communist government.

"His previous experiences will serve him greatly when addressing extreme challenges in Iraq."

Two administration officials said on Tuesday that they were counting on Mr. Lugar's support for Mr. Hill to overcome Republican opposition and secure the 60 votes that would ensure his confirmation. The Senate is divided, with Democrats typically able to count on 58 votes at most. The officials spoke anonymously because Mr. Hill was meeting with Republican senators on Tuesday.

Mr. Hill's nomination has been in trouble since last week, when several Republican senators, including John McCain of Arizona, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, warned that Mr. Hill, a career diplomat, lacked enough experience in the Middle East.

PCOL's Candidate for Peace Corps Director Date: December 2 2008 No: 1288 PCOL's Candidate for Peace Corps Director
Honduras RPCV Jon Carson, 33, presided over thousands of workers as national field director for the Obama campaign and said the biggest challenge -- and surprise -- was the volume of volunteer help, including more than 15,000 "super volunteers," who were a big part of what made Obama's campaign so successful. PCOL endorses Jon Carson as the man who can revitalize the Peace Corps, bring it into the internet age, and meet Obama's goal of doubling the size of the Peace Corps by 2011.

Some PCVs return to Bolivia on their own Date: October 23 2008 No: 1279 Some PCVs return to Bolivia on their own
Peace Corps has withdrawn all volunteers from Bolivia because of "growing instability" and the expulsion of US Ambassador Philip Goldberg after Bolivian President Evo Morales accused the American government of inciting violence in the country. This is not the first controversy surrounding Goldberg's tenure as US ambassador to Bolivia. Latest: Some volunteers have returned to Bolivia on their own to complete their projects.
